SCRATCH A LUNAR SURFACE AND ODDITIES ABOUND

‘MOON” is a drama about a lone astronaut, played by Sam Rockwell, stuck on the moon to mine rocks that supply Earth with most of its energy. His only companion is an all-knowing onboard computer voiced by Kevin Spacey. Freaked-out funky weirdness starts to happen all around him. It’s almost like a David Bowie song . . . so sing this review to the tune of Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”

“Ground Control to astronaut on the ‘Moon’ ignore our plot.

Mine that space rock field to power planet Earth.”

Sam Rockwell, the astronaut is so alone, his soul might rot.

His computer knows much more than he can do.

“This is Duncan Jones, from outer space.

I’m David Bowie’s son.

And my first film is just like my dad’s first songs, with a story filtered through a hit of bong.”

“This is astronaut, I’m in a fix.

I thought I was alone.

Things are heading for a most peculiar bend.

My computer’s Kevin Spacey — foe or friend?

“For heeeeere am I caught up in a flimflam, wond’ring who I am.

I’m getting off this turf.

I’ve got business back on Earth.”

Though we love pretentious grand sci-fi, this film feels kind of thin, just a corporate scandal-philosoph’cal show.

Kind of groovy but not very deep, you know?

“Duncan Jones to Hollywood, this indie’s cool, its look is strong.

Can you dig me, Hollywood?

Can you dig me, Hollywood?

Can you dig me, Hollywood?

Can you . . .”

“Yoooooou made this film on a low budget.

Freaky-looking dream.

Come in for a meet, your career prospects are sweet.”

MOON It’s all dark side. Running time: 97 minutes. Rated R (profanity). At the Empire, the Lincoln Square and the Sunshine.
