CRIME GETTING EXPELLED AT BIG APPLE SCHOOLS

Crime dropped significantly in the city’s schools over the last year, according to data released yesterday.

Major crimes — homicide, rape, assault, robbery, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto — fell 9 percent, from 810 reported incidents to 737, since the last school year, Mayor Bloomberg said.

Violent crimes — the seven major crimes plus misdemeanors and sexual offenses — dipped 8 percent, from 1,531 to 1,412.

Since 2001, the year before Bloomberg took over the school system, major crimes are down 44 percent and violent crimes 32 percent.

“Everybody has a right to go to a workplace that is safe. Everybody certainly has a right to go to a school that is safe,” Bloomberg said.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein added, “We knew early on that we could not expect teachers to teach and children to learn if they didn’t feel safe at school.

“I am proud that we’ve made our schools safer. And it never could have happened without our strong partnership with the Police Department.”

Bloomberg and Randi Weingarten, head of the teachers union, both also emphasized the role that mayoral control plays in school safety.
