MARBURY SET TO JOIN CELTICS

Stephon Marbury will join the Celtics this morning after clearing waivers. He will meet the Boston press and is expected to dress for tonight’s game vs. the Pacers at the new Boston Garden.

It’s unclear if he will play. Marbury hasn’t played since the regular season began when coach Mike D’Antoni deemed him too much of a risk because of his past baggage.

Marbury, who shot 50 percent during preseason, hasn’t practiced with the Knicks since late November. Marbury’s role on the Celtics likely will be off the bench, playing alongside shooting guard Eddie House.

It seems the Celtics need Marbury now more than ever with backup point guard Gabe Pruitt arrested yesterday for DUI in Los Angeles. Pruitt was released on $5,000 bail.

When asked why he would want Marbury, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said, “Because I want to be defending champions again next year.”
