DEVILS PREP CUP SHOPPING LIST

Martin Brodeur’s comeback shutout settled it: GM Lou Lamoriello should beef up the Devils for another Cup run.

Brodeur is scheduled to be in net again this afternoon against the Panthers in Newark (1:00; MSG Plus; WFAN, 660 AM), after beating the Avalanche 4-0 Thursday in his first game since Nov. 1.

The Devils still will be watching Brodeur closely in his comeback from surgery to re-attach his left biceps tendon, but it’s full speed ahead, playing him consecutive games after he missed 50 straight.

Lamoriello already has inquired about adding a top-line center to the team, though the available pickings, other than the Coyotes’ Olli Jokinen, are slim. He will have more options pursuing a defenseman, though everyone else is, too, as Wednesday’s trade deadline looms.

Sources say the Flyers and Bruins are already in the bidding in case the Ducks deal Chris Pronger, and the Flyers and Penguins are among the bidders for Coyote Derek Morris, with the Devils expected to be in on each. Ed Jovanovski also has been tipped as a Devils target.

The Panthers are believed to be fielding major offers for Jay Bouwmeester.

“If we can improve our team. . .” Florida GM Jacques Martin said yesterday.

One option that has been increasingly mentioned in hockey circles is a return of Scott Niedermayer, an upcoming unrestricted free agent like Morris and Bouwmeester – and unlike the $6 million Pronger.

Though Niedermayer and Pronger lack no-trade clauses, one Devil said Niedermayer told him this week that he doesn’t want to leave Anaheim.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of options, though the Devils really need a top defenseman and top center rather than more depth.

They will be asked to include one of their younger talents, such as Johnny Oduya, Andy Greene or David Clarkson, as well as prospects and draft picks, besides a veteran. They probably don’t want to trade demoted goalie Scott Clemmensen to potential playoff opponents Detroit and Buffalo, though the market might be slow otherwise. Jay Pandolfo said he isn’t asking out, nor has he been asked whether he would waive his no-trade clause.

This team that has done so much while in disarray needs the finishing touch. It’s Lamoriello’s chance to complete a contender.

Coach Brent Sutter put the onus on Dainius Zubrus to keep the center spot between Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta, spotting Brian Rolston on that line, where he was in October. . . . The Devils play host to the Flyers tomorrow afternoon. . . . Pandolfo is expected to play his second straight game, with Mike Rupp sitting out. . . . The Devils are 15-4 in their last 19 games and 2-1 in matinees on the season.
