F-16S HUNT PLANE BELIEVED STOLEN IN CANADA

Authorities says two F-16 fighters were dispatched to track a single-engine plane over Wisconsin that was believed stolen in Canada by a student pilot.

Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado, says the Cessna 172 was stolen from Thunder Bay, Ontario, around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Kucharek says the pilot flew erratically and did not communicate with the fighter pilots, who intercepted the plane at the Michigan-Wisconsin state line.

Kucharek says the pilot acknowledged seeing the F-16s but did not obey their nonverbal commands to follow them.

He says the plane was not believed to be a terrorist threat.

Still, Department of Justice spokesman Bill Cosh says the state Capitol building in Madison was evacuated as a precaution.
