On notice

The government may require new faces in ex ecutive suites at banks requiring “exceptional assistance” in the future, Treasury Secretary Tim othy Geithner said yes terday. “We’ll make sure that assistance comes with conditions, not just to protect the taxpayer but to make sure this is the kind of restructuring necessary for them to emerge stronger,” he told “Face the Nation” on CBS.

No deal

IBM withdrew its offer to buy Sun Microsy stems for about $7 billion this weekend, clouding the prospects for a deal that would have shaken up the computing indus try. It is not clear whether Sun and IBM will eventually return to their talks, which were in their final stages in re cent days.

Big drop$

London bankers’ pay has fallen from the high est level among global financial centers to the lowest, a poll showed yesterday. The survey showed an average de cline in compensation of 55 percent.

Labor pains
