Looks like the controversy over the ar rest of African-American Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. is starting to bear real fruit — in cutting waste from New York City government.

No joke: Lee Landor, deputy press secretary for Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, resigned under pressure yesterday after posting disparaging comments about President Obama’s handling of the Gates affair on her Facebook page.
Landor referred to the president as “O-dumb-a” and attacked him for suggesting that Gates had been racially profiled.
Unprofessional? You bet.
But riddle us this: Why does Stringer need a deputy press secretary?
Borough presidents have practically no responsibilities, despite their multimillion-dollar budgets.
Stringer’s office also boasts a press secretary and a communications director; what the hell do they do for a living?
Or maybe that job could fall to another of the 59 employees Stringer has.
Obviously, much waste remains to be cut. Maybe the rest of Stringer’s staff could fire up their Facebook pages, too.
They sure have enough free time.
Meanwhile, a Stringer spokesman says that it’s “undetermined” whether Landor’s vacant position will be filled.
Tsk, tsk, Mr. Beep.
Don’t do it.
