New Wagner assistant Bil Murray’s son

Don’t be surprised if next season, when a player from Wagner College makes a free throw, you might hear from this from the bench:

“It’s in the hole!”

That’s because new coach Dan Hurley today added a name from a familiar family to his staff, The Post has learned. Luke Murray — the son of actor Bill Murray, who made that line famous in his 1980 movie “Caddyshack” — has joined both Dan and Dan’s brother, Bobby, on the Seahawks sideline.

In all seriousness, Luke, who will be the No. 3 assistant behind Bobby Hurley and Bashir Mason, is hardly “a Cinderella story outta nowhere,” another “Caddyshack” one liner. Murray, conversely, is considered a quick riser in the college coaching ranks. He spent last season in the Pac-10 as an assistant at Arizona, under first-year coach Sean Miller. The Wildcats, who were stuck in a rebuilding mode, went 16-15 with Miller and Murray on the bench.

Prior to his stint in Tucson, Murray was an assistant at Division II Post University in Waterbury, Conn., as well as a basketball operations assistant at Quinnipiac.

Perhaps more important to the Seahawks is Murray’s background in New York’s AAU circles. He previously coached high-school-level AAU teams, including the New York Gauchos, a prominent Division I feeder program.

Murray, a New Canaan, Conn., native, graduated from Fairfield in 2007.

The hire capped a busy week for Hurley, who signed his first two recruits: Latif Rivers, a 6-1, 185-pound guard from Elizabeth, N.J., and Orlando Parker, a 6-8, 195-pound forward from Orlando, Fla.

“We’re excited to add Latif to our program,” said Hurley, who was hired April 1 and added his brother to the staff a week later. “As a Jersey guy, he brings that toughness and passion. I’ve known Latif since he was in the eighth grade and I think he is destined to have a tremendous career at Wagner.”

The two recruits bring Wagner’s class to four; 6-2 guard Evan Pierce (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and 6-8 forward Josh Daniell (Old Bridge, N.J.) committed to the Seahawks during the November signing period.

So, does it appear after a 5-26 season that prompted all of these changes at Wagner that the tide is beginning to turn on Staten Island?

To steal one more line from Luke’s father, from the 1981 classic, “Stripes”:

“That’s a fact, Jack.”
