Elizabeth Edwards: Woman behind the man

Goodbye, Elizabeth Edwards (“Elizabeth Loses Her Brave Battle,” Dec. 8).

Your death is our country’s loss, as you were a woman of rare courage and dignity.

On the national stage, it was your presence that carried your husband’s bid for the presidency. John Edwards’ ambition deceived his greatest asset and, ultimately, humiliated him.

Cancer cheated Edwards, but history will not. Her imprint on its pages is stained with the tears of those who love and mourn her. Edwards was a great woman.

What a spectacular life was lived by the extraordinary Edwards, and what a mix of triumph and misery it became.

Edwards rode with her husband from humble beginnings to extraordinary wealth and political power, the family coming close to occupying the White House.

May Edwards be remembered for the grit, determination and grace that she demonstrated, while under fire, both physically and emotionally.

It is sad that she was not able to die with the unconditional love of the husband with whom she raised a family.

It is a sad day with the untimely death of Edwards.

She was a brave woman who suffered much in her life, including an unfaithful husband.

May she rest in peace, for she ran a good race.

If there was ever “a woman behind the man,” it was Edwards.

Like a rock, she stood behind John while he contended for the presidency. Shamefully, he betrayed her at a time when she needed him most.
