Corey Webster on IR, Giants career likely over

Some would say Corey Webster’s 2013 season never really began, considering he played in only four games because of groin and then ankle injuries. He has not appeared in a game since Oct. 27 and showed no sign of getting much healthier, which is why it comes as no surprise that on Tuesday the Giants put him on season-ending injured reserve.

This likely ends Webster’s nine-year run with the Giants. He was a starter at cornerback on two Super Bowl-winning defenses and made one of the biggest defensive plays in franchise history with his overtime interception of Brett Favre in the NFC Championship Game after the 2007 regular season.

This season was a dud from the start. Webster, 31, had to take a significant pay cut to stay on the roster and he barely played at all.

The roster spot was needed to sign receiver Julian Talley off the practice squad. Talley, a product of UMass, is needed on the roster because the Giants’ most famous UMass alum, Victor Cruz, might not play in the final two games after going down against the Seahawks with a concussion and a sprained knee.

The Giants also signed running back Kendall Gaskins to the practice squad. Gaskins played at Richmond and spent time with the Bills in the preseason and on the Titans’ practice squad.

Talley spent the entire season on the practice squad. He had seven catches for 98 yards in the preseason. He played in 45 games at UMass and caught 162 passes for 2,090 yards and 11 touchdowns.
