Oh that 1,500

The smallest of gains gave the S&P 500 its seventh straight winning day yesterday, but the index failed to hold above the 1,500 line, which it briefly exceeded for the first time since 2007.

Claims wane

Claims for jobless benefits unexpectedly dropped last week as applications for unemployment payments decreased to 330,000 in the week ended Jan. 19, compared with the median forecast of 355,000 claims.

Not so (K)nice

Knight Capital, the market maker that agreed to be sold to Getco, reported earnings declined 84 percent. Shares edged up 2 cents, to $3.71.

GOP gal bails

Republican Jill Sommers is resigning as a commissioner of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, leaving the derivatives regulator firmly in Democratic hands as it prepares for a Wall Street overhaul.
