5 hurt in 3-alarm Washington Heights blaze

Five people were hurt in a three-alarm Washington Heights blaze this morning, authorities said.

The fire started about 4:30 a.m. at a six-story building on 188th Street near St. Nicholas Avenue, according to an FDNY spokesman.

The blaze went to a third-alarm shortly before 5 a.m., and spread from the first floor to the fourth floor. About 145 firefighters battled the flames, and extinguished the fire about 6:10 a.m.

One civilian was seriously hurt, and taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital by EMS. Two firefighters and two civilians also suffered minor injuries, according to the spokesman.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
