‘Groundhog Day bank robber’ could be released due to mental-health woes

A man charged with robbing the same downtown bank three days in a row could soon be sprung, courtesy of Manhattan’s mental-health court.

Accused “Groundhog Day” crook Charles Burnett has been jailed since allegedly sticking up the Sovereign branch on Gold Street on three consecutive days in September 2011, making off with $26,000.

But Burnett, 50, has such severe mental-health woes that even prosecutors agreed he should be evaluated for the program, under which he would plead guilty and receive mental-health treatment.

Burnett was charged with first-degree robbery after tellers said he had threatened to shoot them. But he was unarmed when busted.
