Finance commish chosen to head Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty after Rapfogel firing

City Finance Commissioner David Frankel has been tapped to lead the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, replacing former CEO William Rapfogel who was fired in the wake of a probe on financial irregularities.

The social services giant is being looked at by the city Department of Investigation and the city has since suspended millions of dollars in funding to the Met Council, which gets a lion’s share of its $33 million budget from the federal, state and city governments.

Rapfogel, whose wife is the chief of staff to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, had been its CEO since 1992. He has apologized for wrongdoing without providing specifics.

Frankel has served as Finance Commissioner since 2009. His first day is Sept. 30.
