DWI-related deaths up a staggering 100% in 2013

Boozed-up drivers have killed so far this year double the number of people they did last year, according to new city data.

So far in 2013, 36 people have lost their lives in DWI-related traffic deaths, up a staggering 100 percent from 23 deaths in 2012.

The fatalities are up another 125 percent from 16 people killed by DW crashes in 2010.

To combat drivers hitting the streets after bars and pub crawls, the DOT announced a grim new advertising campaign Friday.

A driver with a set of keys and a beer bottle has to choose between a cab on his left, and a patrol car on his right. “Where to: Home or Central Booking?” it reads.

In the next ad, a driver has to choose between a subway stairwell and a hearse. “Where to: the six train or six feet under?” the caption reads.

“Driving while intoxicated is a matter of life and death,” said Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “One bad choice can end lives.”

The ads will be placed atop subway entrances and platforms, as well as promoted through social media and radio spots.

The anti-DWI ads come after a campaign announced earlier this week to combat reckless driving, which has led to a spike in pedestrian deaths this year.
