A hero transit cop, who was shot in the back in January, made a dramatic arrest of a cell phone thief in Brooklyn on Monday.
Saved by his vest, Michael Levay, 27, was back on the streets the following month, and tracked his latest quarry, a subway cellphone thief, using the Find My iPhone app, according to police.
The alleged cell phone thief, Marcus Perez, had robbed an 18-year-old male on the D Train at the 9th Avenue stop at around 12:00 p.m., police said.
Levay and officer Sean Hayes tracked the phone thief down to a home in Bensonhurst shortly after the theft, police said.
When the cops reached the residence they saw a 2002 Mercedes Benz speeding away – and followed it.
After blocking in the Mercedes, cops discovered that the driver using was forged license plate, carrying a BB gun and smoking marijuana.
Another passenger, Malek Yafae, 23, had two stolen cell phones on him, including the victim’s.
Yafae and Perez were charged possession of stolen property; Perez was additionally charged with robbery.
The driver, Mohammed Abusheikh, 25, was charged with possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a weapon.
The hero cop was saved when the bullet pierced the bullet proof vest protecting his lower back.
He was back on full duty by late February.
