Jets report card

Offense

Pick whatever adjective you want — terrible, awful, abysmal. They all apply to the Jets offense on Sunday. They ended up with 267 yards, but 69 of those came on a late-game run from Chris Ivory. QB Geno Smith (8-of-23, 103 yards, 3 INT, 1 fumble) played about as bad as a quarterback can and was benched for the fourth quarter. The offensive line allowed four sacks and could not stop the Bills’ pass rush.

Defense

It was the same old story. The Jets played well up front and terrible on the back end. They held the Bills to 1.8 yards per rush, which you’d think would be enough to win the game since the Bills were missing their top two wide receivers. But cornerbacks Dee Milliner and Antonio Cromartie gave up the deep ball again and the Jets made Bills QB EJ Manuel look like an All-Pro.

Special Teams

Nick Folk showed he is human, missing his first field goal of the year in windy conditions. The return game did not do much with Josh Cribbs not coming close to breaking one. Punter Ryan Quigley averaged 41.2 net yards, which is not bad considering the conditions. The Jets had a penalty on a kickoff.
Grade: C

Coaching

Rex Ryan’s decision to take the team to Dave & Buster’s the night before the game was dumb. Even if he did not intend it to be a slight toward the Bills, you knew that’s how they’d take it. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has to figure out a way to settle Smith down. Ryan and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman better leave Ed Reed deep for the rest of the season.
