Beatty struggling while trying to ‘earn’ his new contract

How bad was left tackle Will Beatty last week? He was abused by Brian Orakpo on the very first play and allowed three sacks against the Redskins. Beatty has allowed 10 sacks this season — the most allowed by any left tackle in the league, according to Pro Football Focus, and more sacks given up in Beatty’s previous four seasons combined.

The reason for the decline? Beatty said Wednesday he has tried too hard to live up to the five-year contract worth up to $38.75 million he signed prior to the season.

“I know I came into this year trying to do way too much and trying to change who I was to fulfill the media hype,’’ Beatty said. “It’s like you got the contract, now eyes are on you, people are expecting more from you and you’re trying to live up to it. My first big contract, I’m like I want to earn this contract, I want to make sure they know that I’m not just a fluke and I’m going out there just not being me, not being the guy that got me to this contract.’’

Justin Tuck was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his four-sack eruption vs. the Redskins. … CB Terrell Thomas, preparing for his first game in his home state of California, says he has purchased 67 tickets for the game vs. the Chargers. … RB Brandon Jacobs (knee), CB Trumaine McBride (groin) and CB Corey Webster (ankle) were limited in practice. Jacobs has missed four of the past five games with his knee issue. “It wasn’t exactly how I thought it would go,’’ Jacobs said of returning to practice. “A little stiff. It wasn’t the best.’’
