TV must-sees before the holiday madness sets in

“Boardwalk Empire” (Sunday, 9 p.m., HBO)

It’s the season finale of the Prohibition-era drama, and if the history of this show is any indication, at least one character won’t live to see Season 5. After last week’s heart-breaking revelations — Nucky (Steve Buscemi) figured out brother Eli (Shea Whigham) is the mole; Gillian (Gretchen Mol) got the bad news that her too-good-to-be-true boyfriend Roy (Ron Phillips) is in fact a Pinkerton sent to nab her for any of her assorted misdeeds; and Chalky (Michael Kenneth Williams) learned he can’t trust anybody. Ever. There’s a long list of major characters who are marked to take a long walk off the boardwalk’s short pier in the series’ best season so far.

“Sons of Anarchy” (Tuesday, 10 p.m., FX)

After weeks of treading water, the road warriors did the unthinkable — they finally ousted Clay (Ron Perlman) from the Club in a permanent, OMG sort of way. With just two episodes left in this season, there’s barely enough time for Tara (Maggie Siff) to decide if she’s really going to turn rat on Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and the rest of the motorcycle gang just as they attempt to go legit.

“The Mentalist” (Sunday, 10 p.m., CBS)

No take-backsies on this one: They promise, promise, promise that Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) will really come face-to-face with Red John, the serial killer who murdered his wife and daughter and has driven this series for the past six seasons.

“Rectify” (Saturday, 2 p.m., Sundance)

If you missed this fantastic series about a wrongly convicted man adjusting to life after 19 years in prison, here’s your chance to catch up. The artsy film channel’s first foray into original series programming is airing a marathon of the six-episode first season. Aden Young is mesmerizing as the man who entered prison as a teenager and emerges as a man overwhelmed by his second chance.

“Major Crimes” (Monday, 9 p.m., TNT)

And if all you want is a cop drama that requires very little mental effort on your part as you clean the house before the in-laws arrive, there is the dependably entertaining “Closer” spinoff, which returns for the second half of its second season. This week they’ll chase after a dealer whose bad batch of drugs is killing high school kids.
