Long Island gunman busted after shootout

A man fatally shot his girlfriend at their Long Island apartment Sunday and then barricaded himself inside with his two young kids, cops said.

The unidentified gunman freed the children — both from a previous relationship — before briefly exchanging gunfire with police at his Ridge home and then surrendering, Suffolk County cops said.

No one was injured in the standoff after the slaying.

Police discovered the body of the man’s girlfriend on the side of their apartment building after receiving numerous calls about gunshots. He killed her around 11:30 a.m., according to cops.

A SWAT team descended on the residence following the grim discovery.

Emergency-services workers then negotiated with the man to release the kids, who are both under the age of 7, authorities said.

The suspect freed his children — and then allegedly fired at least six shots at an Emergency Services Unit truck.

A witness described the as-yet unidentified man’s weapon as a “long rifle.”

The kids were released to their mom’s custody.
