Dinkins hospitalized with pneumonia

Former Mayor David Dinkins has been hospitalized with pneumonia.

His law partner and adviser, Peter Johnson, says Dinkins is being treated at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dinkins was the first black mayor of the nation’s largest city. He served one term, from 1990 to 1993.

Johnson says Dinkins was admitted Wednesday night after experiencing difficulty breathing. He says he spoke by telephone with the former mayor Thursday and that he was sounding much better.

Johnson says the 86-year-old Dinkins keeps a “breakneck schedule.” He’s teaching at Columbia University and supporting various charities.

He notes that Dinkins hosted an event this week for Democratic mayoral nominee Bill de Blasio.
