Red Bulls midfielder’s family robbed outside stadium

The Red Bulls suffered an all-around frustrating day Sunday in Houston. Not only did they blow a two-goal lead and settle for a tie in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals, but one of their players — rookie midfielder Michael Bustamante — tweeted his family was accosted and robbed outside BBVA Compass Stadium.

When the Red Bulls were contacted about the situation, a team spokesperson confirmed only that the situation was being looked into.

“There was a report of an incident outside the stadium involving family members of Michael Bustamante and fans,’’ the spokesman said. “We have reached out to BBVA Compass Stadium’s management and they are investigating the report.’’

Later, Bustamante – the Red Bulls’ first-round pick in the Supplemental Draft out of Boston University – said the incident was handled well by both his team and the Dynamo front office.

“Thanks to the Houston Dynamo Organization together with the NYRB for investigating the incident to find those responsible,’’ Bustamante tweeted. “I understand the incident does not reflect the behavior of ALL Dynamo supporters. Enjoy Wednesday’s Match in Peace.’’

The Red Bulls will host the Dynamo on Wednesday (8 p.m., MSG) in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semis. If they win, they would advance to the Eastern Conference finals, playing at either New England or Sporting KC on Saturday and hosting the return leg Nov. 23.
