AMC renews ‘Walking Dead’ for fifth season

Well that was a no brainer. AMC has renewed zombie drama “The Walking Dead” for a fifth season following record ratings for its current fourth season.

“The Walking Dead’”s season premiere episode drew a huge 16.1 million viewers — almost four million more than its third season finale – which grew to 20.2 million viewers with three days of DVR playback.

The drama is also the top show on television among adults 18-49, the demographic preferred by advertisers, with the season premiere delivering 13.2 million viewers in live+3 ratings, a record for a non-sports telecast on cable.

Current showrunner Scott Gimple will return for Season Five, which will be his second helming the series.

AMC is already at work developing a companion series to “The Walking Dead” based on a new story and characters from comic book author Robert Kirkman.
