Meet the world’s first underwater machine gun

With just over 100 days to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the Russians have unveiled a not-so-secret weapon which may help defend the Games.

The firearm in question is the world’s first underwater machine gun. Yes, an underwater machine gun. And according to Russian news site rt.com, it is much more than that.

The weapon, known as the “ADS” gun, is in fact an amphibious assault rifle. So after shooting your enemies in the murky depths, you can clamber ashore, change cartridges and continue to fight the good fight on land.

The ADS is even equipped with a grenade launcher, so it’s basically your all-in-one gun.

The weapon was unveiled at a recent arms exhibition in Moscow, and there is already talk it could be a key part of the arsenal of security forces patrolling the Black Sea off Sochi.

In other Olympics news, the nation of Georgia may be set to compete in the Games after all.

The Institute of War and Peace Reporting reports that Georgia’s last government, made up of allies of President Mikheil Saakashvili, planned to stay away from the Winter Olympics.

But they were defeated in the October 2012 parliamentary election and replaced by the Georgian Dream coalition led by Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is now prime minister. Mr Ivanishvili is reportedly keen to restore full relations with Moscow. Sending a team to Sochi would help that.

Georgia had a brief civil war with Russia in 2008. The Georgian border is just a few kilometres south of Sochi airport.
