State to probe NY Athletic Commission over comatose boxer

ALBANY — New York’s inspector general is investigating the state Athletic Commission’s treatment of a pro boxer who was hospitalized in a coma following a fight at Madison Square Garden.

After losing a 10-round decision on Nov. 2 to another unbeaten heavyweight, 32-year-old Magomed Abdusalamov was later taken to the Roosevelt Hospital and had a blood clot removed from his brain. A video shows Abdusalamov and Mike Perez in a match that left both battered.

It also shows the commission’s ringside physician checking afterward with the loser, who was talking and walking in the ring.

New York Secretary of State Cesar Perales, who oversees the Athletic Commission, requested the probe after complaints by Abdusalamov’s manager that doctors let him leave.
