Cheerleader killed by driver blowing into DWI device

A Texas cheerleader was killed when a driver smashed into her car while blowing into an anti-DWI gadget, according to a report.

Alexis Butler, 18, of Arlington was backing her Toyota Camry out of a driveway last week when a pickup truck driver smashed into her ride, according to NBC 5.

The teen was rushed to a hospital and died on Friday, according to the local station.

The 31-year-old truck driver, who has not been named, took his eyes off the road for three or four seconds while breathing into a court-ordered ignition device, police told NBC.

The machine shuts off a car when a driver is above the legal blood alcohol limit — but police were baffled by why someone would use it while the truck was moving.

“It’s very concerning to us, as a police department, that an individual may be operating some type of ignition device while they’re in a moving vehicle,” Lt. Chris Cook said.

He added it’s important, “to determine what the manufacturer recommendation is as far as the guidelines in how to operate this type of equipment.”

The driver was not intoxicated at the time of the crash and had not been charged with a crime Saturday, police told the station.

Butler’s family was heartbroken over her tragic death.

“Everyone loved Lexxy,” they said in a statement. “She touched so many lives in just her short 18 years, more than most will touch in a lifetime.”

They added, “We know we’ll see Lexxy again in Heaven and she’ll be an angel watching over us.”
