Trump still going after Sessions in private meetings

President Trump raged yet again about Attorney General Jeff Sessions during a White House dinner on Monday with a group of conservative Republicans, according to people who were there.

Trump vented about Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s probe of Russian meddling in the US election and possible ties to the Trump campaign, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing three sources who were there.

“You could feel it dripping with venom. It was something else,” one guest told the paper.

“’He recused himself on Russia, which he should never have done,’” Trump said, according to the guests.

“He basically told everyone in the room to go tell Sessions to get moving” and do a better job, one person said.

Others said the conversation about the embattled attorney general — whom Trump called “an idiot” during an earlier dust-up — was less tense.

“He’s candid, which shows respect for his guests,” said American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp, whose wife, Mercedes Schlapp, works in the White House communications shop.

Trump also told the guests that his attacks on NFL players and NBA star Steph Curry had “really taken off,” a person who was there told the Journal.

“He was happy. He feels like he’s clearly winning that exchange,” the person said.
