Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist for President Trump, reportedly helped write the provocative address to the UN General Assembly this week in which Trump dubbed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “Rocket Man.”
Bannon and former White House adviser Sebastian Gorka worked with Trump’s UN speechwriter on Tuesday’s address before they both were ousted the White House, Gorka told Newsweek on Thursday.
“The individual who wrote that speech—and it’s not the person they normally say it is—came to Steve and myself and sat in Steve’s office with me before we left the White House and we consulted with him on what that speech should be about,” Gorka told the magazine.
In the speech, which echoed Trump’s nationalist rhetoric, the president threatened to “totally destroy North Korea” while calling the Iran nuclear deal an “embarrassment to the US.”
Trump also said of Kim Jong Un: “Rocket Man is on a suicide mission”
Gorka said he was pleased that Trump stuck to the script he had worked on.
“He kept his word, he got the text past the swamp dwellers and it was classic Trump, it was classic ‘MAGA’ agenda,” Gorka said.
“Everything in there was classic Donald Trump, from calling out evil, from challenging the multilateral globalism that the U.N. has become.”
The White House responded to the story by saying Gorka’s claim was “100 percent false.”
