Hillary Clinton tried to put her best foot forward Monday after taking a tumble and being forced to cancel several media appearances to promote her new book in the United Kingdom.
The former Democratic presidential candidate failed to show up for the BBC’s “Woman’s Hour” and ITV’s “This Morning” show, the Daily Mail reported.
But she later showed up on the BBC’s “Graham Norton Show,” where her spokesman Nick Merrill tweeted a photo of her wearing a surgical boot.
Merrill said Clinton joked about how she had caught her heel on steps and twisted her ankle — but on the show, she said she actually broke her toe.
“I was running down the stairs in heels with a cup of coffee in hand, I was talking over my shoulder and my heel caught and I fell backwards,” she said, the paper reported. “I tried to get up and it really hurt. I’ve broken my toe.”
“This Morning” host Philip Schofield lamented earlier on Snapchat that he was “supposed to be interviewing Hillary Clinton… but she’s fallen over and hurt her foot!! Gutted.”
“Woman’s Hour” presenter Jane Garvey also informed her listeners that Clinton would be a no-show.
“I’m really, really sorry about that. I think you can understand just how sorry I am,” she said. “I’d read the book and everything. Apologies.”
The former first lady, who turns 70 on Oct. 26, got X-rays and decided to continue her tour to promote “What Happened.”
Her fall came after she appeared Sunday night at the Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival, where she weighed in on the kneeling controversy roiling the NFL.
She defended players who take a knee during the national anthem, calling it a “reverent position.”
“That’s what black athletes kneeling was all about,” she said in response to a question about ways to resist the White House. ”That’s not against our anthem or our flag.”
Trump reacted to her comments Monday by saying that “when you take a knee … you’re sitting, essentially, for our great national anthem, you’re disrespecting our flag and you’re disrespecting our country.”
The president, who recently called on team owners to fire “sons of bitches” who kneeled, softened his stance Monday.
“The NFL should have suspended some of these players for one game,” Trump said. “Not fire them. Suspended them for one game. And then if they did it again, it could’ve been two games, then three games, and then for the season.”
Trump also reacted to the possibility of another Clinton run for the White House in 2020 by urging her to go for it.
“I was recently asked if Crooked Hillary Clinton is going to run in 2020? My response was, ‘I hope so!’” he tweeted Monday.
