White giraffes captured on video for first time ever

Two rare white giraffes have been filmed for the first time ever.

The mother and baby were spotted near Kenya’s Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy in May, but the footage has just recently exploded on the internet.

“The mother kept pacing back and forth a few yards in front of us while signaling the baby giraffe to hide behind the bushes,” Hirola Conservancy wrote in a blog post, adding that neither appeared disturbed by the human presence.

The animals have a condition known as leucism, which prevents pigmentation in skin cells and causes skin to turn white.

A local villager first saw the animals and then alerted park rangers, who said it was the first time they’d witnessed the pair.

The conservation group said it’s aware of only two previous confirmed sightings. The first report of a white giraffe came from Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park last January, followed three months later by another sighting in Kenya.
