Bronx Dems face liberal backlash for gay marriage opposition

Two Bronx pols are being challenged in City Council races by political neophytes ripping their socially conservative stances.

Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., who has voted against same-sex marriage, is facing 30-year-old Elvin Garcia, who once served as Mayor de Blasio’s LGBT liaison, in the district covering Soundview, Castle Hill and Parkchester. Garcia, who is openly gay, says he’s focusing on other issues, like pumping more funds into public schools.

“I’m not going back in the closet, but I’m not running on identity politics,” he told The Post.

In the West Bronx, incumbent Councilman Fernando Cabrera is fending off Randy Abreu, 28, a lawyer who worked in President Barack Obama’s Energy Department. Progressives ripped Cabrera after a YouTube video emerged in 2014 showing him praising the homophobic government of Uganda.

“He’s a person that was a Republican up until the moment he ran for this seat,” Abreu said of his opponent.
