White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci on Tuesday said there is a “level of tension” between Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and that it’s “probably” true the president wants him gone.
“I have an enormous amount of respect for the attorney general,” Scarmucci told Hugh Hewitt when the radio show host said the “president wants him gone.”
“But I do know the president pretty well,” Scaramucci continued. “And if there’s this level of tension in the relationship that’s public, you’re probably right.”
Scaramucci, who was named by Trump to run the communications shop at the White House last Friday, said he thinks the president is “obviously frustrated.”
“But I don’t want to speak for the president on that because he’s a cabinet official,” he said. “And I sort of think that has to be between the president of the United States and a cabinet official.”
The president has been on the attack against the attorney general since he said in an interview with the New York Times last week that he wouldn’t have named Sessions to his cabinet if he had known Sessions would recuse himself from the Russia investigation.
Trump continued his very public assault on Sessions earlier Tuesday.
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes (where are E-mails & DNC server) & Intel leakers!,” he wrote on Twitter.
It was a line of attack that Trump used Monday to go after his “beleaguered” attorney general.
“So why aren’t the Committees and investigators, and of course our beleaguered A.G., looking into Crooked Hillarys crimes & Russia relations?,” the president wrote on Monday.
Sessions said last week that he would stay on as attorney general “as long as is appropriate.”
