Scalise had ‘severe internal bleeding,’ needs several more operations: hospital

New details have emerged regarding the injuries House Majority Whip Steve Scalise suffered during Wednesday’s shooting in Washington — including how the bullet that struck him “traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding.”

The congressman remained in critical condition as hospital officials released a more detailed description of his wounds.

“Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip,” they said in a statement, posted on the 51-year-old’s Twitter page.

“He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations. We will provide periodic updates.”

Scalise is said to be at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, awaiting the rest of his surgeries.

He was one of several people who were wounded in the shooting early Wednesday after James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, opened fire on GOP leaders playing in a charity baseball game.

Witnesses said Scalise had been standing at second base when he was shot.

“The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding,” hospital officials said.

In a statement, Scalise’s office said he had been “in good spirits” prior to entering surgery.

“He is grateful for the brave actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues,’ they explained.
