High schoolers to set world record running in flip flops

Forget about lacing up for this benefit run – students at Tappan Zee High in Rockland County plan to trek 1 kilometer in flip flops, hoping to set a world record in the process.

The Orangeburg students are braving the pavement June 11 to try to break the Guinness Book of World Records entry for the most people running that length in flip flops for a charity.

The current record holder is Spain, where a group of 845 people padded across the finish line last year.

Organizers say the race is being held in memory of Paul Doctor, a fifth-grade teacher from Cottage Lane Elementary who died last year.

Money raised will be given to the Hi Tor Animal Shelter in Pomona.
