Here comes the first peek at how fair Jets’ QB fight is

The Jets have been working out at the team’s training center for about a month now, but the action makes a jump Tuesday, when they have their first organized team activity (OTA).

OTA is basically a fancy way to say practice. Up until now, the concentration has been on strength training, conditioning and classroom work with limited activity on the field. Now, they have 10 OTAs over the next three weeks followed by a three-day minicamp.

Here are five storylines we will be watching during OTAs:

1. The quarterback rotation

Did you think we would start with the competition at right tackle? Nope. All eyes will be on the quarterbacks, like usual. The key thing to watch will be how coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator John Morton divide the reps among Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. This will be tough to gauge accurately, because the media only is allowed to watch three of the 10 OTAs. But a general sense can be gained of how even the distribution is.

The other main thing under the microscope will be Hackenberg’s development. Will he show strides in his second year? Every poor throw and interception will be scrutinized. Petty is coming off left shoulder surgery, but said he expects to participate fully.

2. Is Eric Decker back?

Decker is one of the few veterans who survived the offseason purge, but questions remain if he will be part of the team in September. Decker, 30, is coming off of hip and shoulder surgeries. The Jets will be watching closely to see if he looks like his old self. That, along with how quickly the team’s young receivers develop, will determine whether Decker is kept on the roster.

3. The kids in the back

Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye are expected to solidify the Jets’ defensive backfield for years to come, after getting drafted in the first and second round, respectively. How quickly can they come along? Rookies typically look lost during their first spring, so expectations should be low … for now. It will be interesting to see if they are with the starting defense immediately. Former coach Rex Ryan used to hand high draft picks starting jobs. Bowles usually makes them at least appear to have to earn it. It would not be surprising if Calvin Pryor and Rontez Miles are the starting safeties on Tuesday. It would be surprising if they stay there long.

4. Looking for Mo-mentum

Bowles hired Morton as his new offensive coordinator this winter after Chan Gailey retired. We will get an initial feel for Morton’s offense during these workouts. During the rookie minicamp earlier this month, the tempo of the practice was much quicker than under Gailey. I would expect that to continue in these workouts. Morton was very vocal in those practices, too. Morton is expected speak to the New York media for the first time Tuesday, so he can answer some questions about his coaching philosophy and plans.

5. The untradeables

It was no secret the Jets tried hard to trade defensive end Sheldon Richardson and Pryor during the draft, but did not find any takers. How do these two feel about being shopped? Both of them have been known for delivering interesting quotes in the past. We will see what they have to say this time if they speak to reporters. Pryor can’t be happy to see the team draft safeties in the first and second round. Will it light a fire under him or will he pout?
