Special-ed teacher accused of having sex with student

A special-ed teacher at an all-boys school in Texas has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a student, reports said.

Rebecca Goerdel, 28, was taken into custody by police in Grand Prairie on Friday after they received word of the alleged affair earlier this month, according to the Dallas Morning News.

She is just the latest in a long line of teachers to be busted philandering with students this year.

In Texas alone, there have been at least three educators who have been arrested this month for having an improper relationship with their pupils — all within the span of a week.

Goerdel, who taught at the Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Kennedy Middle School, was reportedly seeing one of the male students, though it’s unclear if he was one of her own.

The University of Texas grad is listed as a special education inclusion teacher on the Grand Prairie school district’s website, the News reports.

Such classes include students with disabilities.

“This kind of conduct is outrageous and will not be tolerated,” Superintendent Susan Hull seethed in a statement posted on Twitter.

“The teacher-student relationship is sacred, It reflects a vow from teachers to parents that their children are safe,” she said. “When a teacher in Grand Prairie ISD breaks that vow, he or she will be dealt with quickly and aggressively.”

Goerdel was promptly removed from her teaching position after the allegations against her first came to light earlier this month, the district said.

“Central administrators received information indication potential impropriety after school dismissed on the afternoon of March 10,” their statement read. “She was relieved of all duties immediately and has not been in the classroom since. Law enforcement was notfied that same afternoon and opened an investigation.”

Goerdel’s arrest came just three days after a seventh grade English teacher and cheerleading coach was arrested in Roanoke, TX. for having an improper relationship with a middle school student, according to the Star-Telegram.

Katherine Ruth Harper, 27, is accused of having a relationship with a 15-year-old boy last June and July over summer break, police said.

Authorities weren’t notified about the alleged romps until December, the Star-Telegram reports.

Just one day before Harper’s arrest, married Texas teacher Sarah Fowlkes was arrested and suspended from her job at Lockhart High School after being accused of sleeping with a 17-year-old male student.

In her case, police were also reportedly alerted to the alleged affair on March 10.

Fowlkes mugshot wound up going viral after she chose to crack a cheerful smile for the camera.

Across the country, countless teachers have been busted in recent months for having sexual relationships with their students. Arrests have been reported in Florida, Ohio, Georgia, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
