Trump calls for probe into Schumer over old Putin photo

President Trump on Friday called for an investigation into Sen. Chuck Schumer — because the senate minority leader met with Vladimir Putin at the opening of a Russian gas station in Chelsea in 2003.

“We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russia and Putin. A total hypocrite!” the commander-in-chief wrote in an apparently tongue-in-cheek tweet Friday shortly before 1 p.m.

Schumer has called for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign for denying that he had met with any Russian officials during his Senate confirmation hearings.

He later confirmed press reports that he met twice with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, but said they did not discuss trump’s campaign.

“The bottom line is we have an obligation to get to the truth. We must evaluate the scope of Russia’s interference in our election,” the New York Democrat tweeted following reports of multiple meetings between Trump campaign staffers and Russian officials.

Team Trump first fired back by tweeting a photo of Schumer and Vladimir Putin yukking it up over coffee and donuts at the gas station.

“@SenSchumer- do it over a donut and coffee,” White House social media director Dan Scavino cracked on the tweet.

The president responded with his own tweet showing the photo hours later — one in a string of Twitter posts late Thursday and Friday after a relatively quiet social media week for the leader of the free world.

A Trump spokeswoman did not respond to a question about whether Trump was serious, but a White House source told The Post, “No dude, take a joke.”

But the New York Democrat fired back later in the day.

“Happily talk re: my contact w Mr. Putin & his associates, took place in ‘03 in full view of press & public under oath. Would you &your team?” he wrote on Twitter.

Stu Loeser, a Schumer aide at the time, also weighed in.

“Whoa, while at a phones-down meeting, the President of the United States tweeted about a photo opp I coordinated 13+ years ago!” he tweeted.

White House Spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders slammed Schumer while repeating the administration line that Sessions did nothing wrong.

“I guess it’s kind of lost on me where [Sessions’ meetings] would be newsworthy. I mean Chuck Schumer sitting and having drinks with Putin and that’s not a news story?”

Schumer and Putin noshed on coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts during the visit, as nervous employees looked on.
