Trump ‘welcomes’ meeting with Jackie Evancho and transgender sister

President Trump would “welcome” a meeting with the young singer who sang the national anthem at his inauguration and her sister, who is transgender, the White House said Thursday.

“Yeah, I think the president would be welcome to meet with her,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said at the daily press briefing.

Jackie Evancho, the 16-year-old star who sang at Trump’s inauguration, requested the meeting with the president after he reversed transgender bathroom protections. Evancho’s older sister, Juliet, is transgender.

“@realDonaldTrump u gave me the honor 2 sing at your inauguration. Pls give me & my sis the honor 2 meet with u 2 talk #transgender rghts,” Jackie Evancho tweeted Wednesday.

The sisters were thrilled with the response.

“Maybe there’s a way we can create a federal law or something” to protect transgender people from discrimination, Jackie said on CNN.

Her sister rejected the Trump administration’s argument that transgender bathrooms are a state issue.

“It needs to be on a federal level because if it’s not and it’s left in states’ hands, then we are going to have this many states saying one thing, and this many states saying another,” Juliet said on CNN.

“It’s just going to divide America more than it already is,” Jackie added. “We’re trying to work to piece America together again.”
