Pregnancy has never looked sexier

Finally, real women have something in common with Beyoncé. Two weeks ago, an Instagram post announcing her pregnancy — with Queen Bey clad in curve-hugging lingerie and a veil in front of a wall of flowers — practically broke the internet. To date, it’s racked up more than 10.4 millions likes.

While some people saw the photo and assumed it was the product of literal Hollywood navel-gazing, many pregnant women saw a photo not so dissimilar from ones they have in their own albums.

As social media has exploded, more and more photographers across the country have seen pregnant clients photo-directing their maternity shots, incorporating elaborate costumes, settings, pets and props to mark the future arrival of their little bundle of joy.

“Many of my clients come to me looking for a maternity shoot that’s unique and encompasses some of their life story,” says Laney DiMezza, owner of Laney Lane Photography in Runnemede, NJ. DiMezza, who chronicled her own pregnancy by getting her belly painted with a koi fish to represent the Pisces baby she was carrying, says the resulting experience is memorable for all parties. “Family heirlooms and fun props always make for a more interesting and unique experience.”

Here, eight women share the stories behind their one-of-a-kind maternity photos.

It cost around $3,000 in total to pull off, but Carrie Gatto, 36, of Upper Saddle River, NJ, was determined to stage a dramatic maternity shoot in the center of New York for her fourth pregnancy. In June 2015, the then-eight-months-pregnant full-time mom posed for glamorous shots by Burlington, Conn.-based photographer Christina Houser. They were taken on a crossing on Sixth Avenue after Houser's team hired a room at the nearby Baccarat Hotel. "I had my hair and makeup done beforehand, and then we stepped into the street," Gatto says. "It was in rush-hour traffic, and people must have thought I was crazy!"Christina Houser
Army officer Keturah Antongiorgi, 26, who is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, Googled the term "maternity milk bath" when she first found out she was expecting in January 2016. She quickly discovered talented local photographer Neva Michelle Santiago, who specializes in such shoots. "Something lured me in about the way the milky-white water disguises just enough," says Antongiorgi. The first lieutenant, who will pin captain in May, posed in August 2016 in her own bathtub, where there was a lot of natural light. "People think the pictures are Photoshopped, but they're not," adds the mom of 5-month-old son Gianni Jr.Neva Michelle / <a href="http://nevamichelle.com/&quot; target="_blank">nevamichelle.com</a>

Former Rockette Jaime Windrow, 40, showed off her dancing skills during an underwater pool session with specialist photographer Tricia Krefetz. The ex-New Yorker, now of Deerfield Beach, Fla., did the shoot two years ago while eight months pregnant with her second daughter, Alexa. "I have an affinity for water, and I loved Tricia's style of photography," says Windrow, who posed in a nude strapless bra and swaths of floaty fabric. "I certainly drew on my dance training for the pictures." Tricia Krefetz / <a href="http://www.clickcapturecreate.com/&quot; target="_blank">clickcapturecreate.com</a>
Oakland, NJ, mom Aubrey Marino isn't one to follow the crowd, and wanted something different for her first maternity shoot with her oldest kid, Mossimo, now 3. "It was a really cold day, and I was shivering outside in my mom's garden," says the 30-year-old blonde, who is currently expecting her third child. Marino's husband, Joey, 36, was tasked with quickly running past his wife and throwing white fabric into the air. "The timing was very tight," Marino says of the shoot, which was choreographed by Houser.Christina Houser
Dia Marchionne, 36, didn't want her buff husband, Andrew, 38, to miss out on her maternity shoot in fall 2016. The Hoboken, NJ-based blonde, who works in advertising sales, posed for local portrait photographer Jennifer Hartshorn wearing bespoke lingerie from an Etsy seller -- with Andrew looking on. "He's a wrestling coach and has a great body," says Marchionne, mother of 3-month-old Grafton. "I had Andrew wear soft, white cotton pajama bottoms by James Perse."Hartshorn Portraiture / <a href="http://www.hartshornportraiture.com/&quot; target="_blank">hartshornportraiture.com</a>

Keen outdoorswoman Katie Lamon, 26, embraced her love of all things natural when she posed for Austin, Texas, photographer Sheeanna Singer. "I'm a pretty dramatic person, and I wanted my maternity pictures to be different," says the hairdresser mom of two. "The idea is a bohemian Stevie Nicks standing against a tree." The photographs were taken last summer in a dog park in downtown Austin and included Lamon's pet ball python, Lucias. "We used smoke bombs to create a swamplike atmosphere, and he wasn't too happy about that," says Lamon. "[But] he fitted in with the earthy, natural, witchy tone of the shoot." When Jessy Benson, 31, of Lebanon, Ore., found out she was pregnant in 2012, one thing was for certain -- somehow, her horse, Keno, would be part of the action. "I've had Keno since he was a baby himself. He's been a part of every milestone in my life for over a decade. I knew that I wanted some photos to commemorate both my pregnancy and my bond with Keno," says Benson. She went to Katy Sharratt, of KS Photography in Albany, Ore., who was equally excited about the shot. Jessy's husband, Matthew, stayed just outside the frame "in case anything happened," says Sharratt. Today, the photo's biggest fan is Benson's daughter Paisley, now 4. "She loves horses," says Benson. "After all, she's been with them since the womb."Katy Sharatt / <a href="http://ksphotographyblog.com/&quot; target="_blank">photographyks.com</a>
Shylee Vahdat, of Aliso Viejo, Calif., marked her fifth pregnancy with a stunning milk-bath photo shoot taken by talented photographer Ana Brandt. "I figured it was going to be my last pregnancy, so I wanted to do something extra special," says the 35-year-old full-time mom. She got the milk-bath idea from Pinterest and thought the experience last summer would be similar to a luxury spa day. How wrong she was. "The combination of water and milk was very cold," she says, with a laugh. "Also, I had just dyed my hair the previous day, and the dye was bleeding into the bathwater!" Her youngest son, Sean, is now 5 months old. Explains Brandt: "It's cold, comfortable and awkward to pose. But Shylee rocked it and looks amazing."Ana Brandt / <a href="http://www.anabrandt.com/&quot; target="_blank">anabrandt.com</a>
