Knicks in danger of losing point guard prospect they’d stashed

INDIANAPOLIS — With undrafted rookie Ron Baker solidifying his place as a Knick after Friday’s heroics in Milwaukee, Westchester Knicks point guard Chasson Randle has a workout Sunday with the 76ers, according to an NBA source.

The Sixers have been looking for perimeter help to offset their glut of big men. The Knicks had many chances to make a move, but Baker’s contract finally became guaranteed Saturday for the rest of the season when the Knicks kept him on the roster. They needed to waive him Saturday at 5 p.m. to clear waivers by the Jan. 10 deadline.

“At the beginning of the year, I had a meeting with Jeff and he had mentioned something about January,’’ Baker said. “If I stayed on the right path as I did in preseason, I’ll be fine. I wasn’t concerned after that meeting, but I’m trying to keep improving obviously.’’

Randle, 23, was cut in training camp after suffering an orbital bone fracture and was told he could be re-signed from the D-League to the NBA roster in January when 10-day contracts are distributed. The Knicks now would have to cut either Marshall Plumlee or Maurice Ndour to open a spot.

Baker has proven his worth after spurring the Knicks’ fourth-quarter rally Friday from 14 points down to snap their six-game losing streak. On Saturday in Indianapolis, Hornacek didn’t turn to Baker until the start of the fourth down by 26 points, and sure enough, within six minutes, the lead was cut in half in their 123-109 loss.
