Paramedic overdoses while treating OD patient

An Ohio paramedic accidentally overdosed while treating a patient suffering from an apparent opioid OD, officials said.

Fairborn city officials said that the emergency responder began to show signs of an overdose soon after responding to the scene Thursday night, the Dayton Daily News reported.

“Police and fire responded to a call last evening and administered life support to a patient on a suspected overdose,” City Manager Rob Anderson said. “In the course of treating the patient and cleaning up the scene, one of our paramedics got a secondary exposure.”

The paramedic was administered Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal drug, and transported to Soin Medical Center for treatment. The victim’s identity was not released.

Others at the scene, including paramedics and police officers, were also exposed to the unidentified drug but experienced less severe reactions.

“As far as we know, everybody is fine,” Anderson said. “I believe everybody has recovered.”
