German diplomat has broken ‘a bunch’ of wife’s bones: neighbor

An allegedly abusive German Consulate attaché at the center of a diplomatic-immunity battle with New York authorities is a violent man who keeps his wife a virtual prisoner at their Upper East Side apartment, a neighbor told The Post.

“That man is terrifying,” the neighbor, who lives in the same apartment building, said of Joachim Haubrichs.

“That he could get away with it, it’s terrible,” the neighbor said of the NYPD’s inability to arrest Haubrich. “He is a predator. I would say he is a stereotypical German Nazi.”

NYPD investigators allege Haubrichs beat his wife, Henna Johnson. But authorities cannot bring charges against him because he has diplomatic immunity.

Johnson, 35, has accused Haubrichs, 56, of punching her and throwing her into a wall in their bedroom last week, giving her a black eye.

“This happens to her regularly,” said the neighbor, who asked not to be named for fear of Haubrichs’ temper.

“I hear screaming [from the apartment],” the neighbor said.

“It’s usually him [screaming], in German.”

“He hits her real hard. He’s broken a bunch of her bones in her face. He only hits her in the face. Black eyes. I’ve seen a million of them. Her eye socket has been broken. Her jaw.”

On Friday, Manhattan prosecutors took the first step to bring Haubrichs to justice. The District Attorney’s Office formally requested the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs petition the US State Department to request Germany waive the Haubrichs’ immunity.

Failing that, the US can require him to leave the country.

“He threatened me when I came over,” the neighbor said.

The neighbor heard Haubrichs tell Johnson: “There is no going out, there is no friends.”

Haubrichs warned the neighbor, “If I come back over, there would be consequences.”

“He’s got anger-management problems. The moment he sees something he doesn’t like, he loses it. He has no filter.

“ I was afraid he would freak out. I avoid him at all costs.”

Johnson told The Post last week that she is from Pakistan and that her family married her off to Haubrichs when she was 19 years old.

“They didn’t know each other. Her family wanted her to be taken care of. She’s stuck. She is frustrated,” the neighbor said.

“He keeps her locked up, like in a dungeon. She has no control over the bank accounts. She doesn’t have any money. He doesn’t want her working. She doesn’t really leave the apartment.

“He could technically beat her face to a bloody pulp and get away with it. She can’t do anything unless he signs the divorce papers. He told her he would never sign.”

Haubrichs and the press attaché for the German Consulate have repeatedly declined requests for comment.

“We’re not talking to reporters,” Haubrichs said Saturday.
