‘Robbed Kim’ Halloween costume is making people angry

Halloween is around the corner, which means sweater weather, leaves turning colors and the annual firestorm surrounding offensive costumes.

An early contender for this year’s most controversial costume is inspired by Kim Kardashian’s robbery in Paris.

People were up in arms after retailer Costumeish released its “Parisian Heist Robbery Victim Costume Kit.” The getup does not refer to the 35-year-old reality star by name, but appears to depict her being gagged and bound.

The kit comes with a long black wig, robe and 2 feet of rope. For $69.99, it also throws in a plastic “$4 million dollar” ring reminiscent of the diamond one Kardashian lost in the heist.

Outraged shoppers made it clear that they were not fans of the costume.

“This is absolutely disgusting!” wrote one shopper in a review. “She is a wife, a mother, a sister, and most importantly a human being. Yes Halloween is a time to dress up and have fun but not at the expense of another person’s tragedy!”

Others called for a boycott of the costume website.

“Congratulations on losing several customers with this tasteless piece,” another reviewer wrote.

Costumeish defended the ensemble against the outcry.

“I’m sad that people are offended by it, but it is Halloween: it’s one day out of the year,” Costumeish vice president Johnathon Weeks told BuzzFeed. “Halloween should be a light-hearted, spirited party and people should be able to laugh at it and think it’s funny.”

Weeks added that the site had not sold any of the costume yet, “if that matters.”

“If people find it tasteless or they are offended by it, it’s Halloween,” Weeks said. “Maybe you should just shut your life out and not go outside.”

Kardashian will not be the first in her family whose likeness inspired a controversial Halloween costume. Last year, Caitlyn Jenner costumes of her Vanity Fair cover sparked outrage from transgender activists. Despite the controversy, it became one of the best-selling costumes of 2015, reported Forbes.

The “Robbed Kim” costume isn’t the only Halloween attire already causing controversy. Amazon faced outrage after selling “sexy” costumes for 4-year-old girls.
