Frederic Seegal acquires 5 titles of Dance Media

Wall Street dealmaker Frederic Seegal has acquired five titles of Dance Media from Macfadden Communications.

Seegal, the one-time CEO of Wasserstein Perella and current vice chairman of Peter J. Solomon Co., has brokered some of the biggest media deals in history, but says taking over the small five-title company is not a vanity project.

“This is a profitable venture, I just think it could be made to be more so,” said Seegal, who said he plans to expand its digital offerings and attract more advertisers.

The publications he is picking up include Dance, Pointe, Dance Spirit and two business-to-business titles — Dance Teacher and Dance Retailer News. Terms of the sale were not disclosed but the group’s revenue is estimated to be in the $5 million-plus range.

The current staff, with Amy Cogan as VP and group publisher and Karen Hildebrand as editorial VP, will continue.

Seegal has been a longtime patron of the arts, serving as past president of the American Ballet Theater’s board of trustees and as a trustee for the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera.
