Behold the chocolate-chip-cookie-dough ice cream sandwich

A new twist on the ice cream sandwich.Victoria Morris

Here’s your final gobble for the last gasp of summer.

Maman bakeries, which make some of the best chocolate chip cookies in the city, have started serving a chocolate-chip-cookie-dough ice cream sandwich. Two thick sheets of cookie dough bookend a thicker layer of vanilla ice cream — from California favorite McConnell’s — making for a frozen treat that’s selling like hot cakes.

It’s an engineering marvel that solves the structural flaws of standard ice cream sandwiches.

Those are often horribly messy to eat, crumbly cookie and dripping ice cream battling each other as you try to take a bite. Here, the dough and the ice cream are a unified front of deliciousness.

“We prepare the sandwich [and] then freeze the entire thing very, very cold,” says Maman co-owner Elisa Marshall. “This ensures that the ice cream and the ‘sandwich’ part are at the same temperature, making it easy to eat and not a mess.”

The sandwich is also an improvement upon a scoop of cookie-dough ice cream, where there’s rarely a satisfactory amount of raw chunks buried within the ice cream. Here there’s a perfect cream-to-cookie dough ratio in every mouthful.

It makes for a blissful snack that, like summer itself, is over far too soon.
