A Wisconsin man who was convicted as a teen of helping his uncle rape and kill a woman — in a case profiled in the hit Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer” — will be released from prison.
A federal court in Milwaukee overturned Brendan Dassey’s 2007 conviction Friday and ordered him freed within 90 days.
Judge William Duffin said Dassey’s rights were violated when he was offered “false promises” by cops who grilled the then-16-year-old on the 2005 murder without an adult present.
Dassey, a special-education student, confessed to helping his uncle Steven Avery rape and kill Teresa Halbach.
But video of his hours-long interrogations led his attorney argue that the confession was coerced.
Police footage shows Dassey offering multiple narratives about the day Halbach disappeared.
Dassey, now 26, was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree sexual assault and mutilation of a corpse. He was sentenced to 41 years.
