Former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner, who was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on campus, is scheduled to be released from jail on Friday, Sept. 2 after serving only half of his sentence, CNN reports.
Turner, who was sentenced to only six months of jail time despite being found guilty on three felony counts of sexual assault, began serving the sentence in early June.
Now, after spending three months behind bars, Turner is slated to be released on “good behavior,” according to jail records.
Turner’s controversial case ignited widespread public outrage, as many felt the jail term was far too lenient for the convicted rapist. While Turner also received three years of probation, the punishment paled in comparison to the six-year jail term requested by prosecutors.
Aaron Persky, the judge who presided over Turner’s case, came under harsh criticism for the sentencing, with millions petitioning for his dismissal. Persky, who has been frequently accused of showing favoritism and leniency towards athletes, recently removed himself from hearing criminal cases.
