The USA Olympic uniforms are everything a bro could wish for

Americans at the Olympics are known for two things: winning gold and, recently, looking like they summer in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Credit for the latter is due to Ralph Lauren, who on Friday unveiled the uniforms Team USA will sport when the 2016 opening ceremony kicks off in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5.

The nation’s strongest, swiftest, fiercest athletes will enter Maracanã stadium wearing navy single-breasted blazers embroidered with the Polo insignia, striped T-shirts, white slim-fit jeans and tricolor boat shoes.

It’s a good look — if you’re a lacrosse bro looking to impress the folks on Parent’s Day after flunking Psych 101. For everyone else, it is one fist-pump shy of a preppy nightmare, patriotism be damned.

But this is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Ralph Lauren, darling of the country-club set, who has outfitted the US Olympic and Paralympic squads since 2008.

To be fair, the opening ceremony ensemble is far less offensive than the closing ceremony one, which was publicized in April and swiftly incinerated on Twitter. That outfit — chino shorts, ribbon belts, the boat shoes — looks like a soccer-mom costume from a Tina Fey skit.

Another positive: The 2016 threads are USA-made.

In 2012, Ralph Lauren drew sharp criticism for outsourcing the production of the uniforms to China.

Since then, the company has endeavored to keep all production stateside, working with several US partners and manufacturers. This year the company tapped Rochester, NY-based suit supplier Hickey Freeman specifically to make the $695 logoed jacket, which, along with the other gear, is now available for purchase online and in select stores. Prices for the rest of the collection range from $85 (for the grosgrain belt) to $350 (for those damn boat shoes).

The best part of Friday’s announcement was the revelation that the flag-bearer jacket features electroluminescent panels as part of its design — meaning it glows in the dark.

The blazer “will literally light the way for Team USA as they represent our country in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,” David Lauren, son of Ralph and the brand’s executive vice president of global advertising, said in a statement.

It’s certainly not subtle, but it sure will look cool.
