Has A-Rod talked to Derek Jeter? ‘Who?’

BOSTON — Derek who?

Alex Rodriguez, appearing on ESPN Radio on Thursday before his final game on the road with the Yankees at Fenway Park, was asked if he had talked with “Derek” since it was decided Friday would be Rodriguez’s last day with the Yankees.

“With who?” Rodriguez said.

“Derek Jeter,” he was told.

“About what?” Rodriguez responded.

Rodriguez acknowledged Jeter had reached out to him, but his “inbox is completely full,” so the two haven’t chatted.

Later Thursday, Rodriguez said he was thrown off by the question.

“At some point I’ll connect with everyone,” Rodriguez said. “That was not what it looked like.”

He has talked with Joe Girardi. When Rodriguez met with Girardi on Tuesday to discuss this week, he broached the subject of playing the field in The Bronx.

“I said, ‘Can I get a chance play third base on Friday?’ ” Rodriguez said. “He just said no. … It would have been fun, but it would have been a big request. I know we’re playing games, so I totally get the answer.”

Girardi said: “We thought about it, but he hasn’t done any work [there]. We’re still in the business of trying to win games here.”

If the Yankees find themselves in a lopsided game, Girardi said he would consider granting Rodriguez his wish.

“CC [Sabathia] is on the mound [Friday],” Rodriguez said. “There’s a lot of history there, and I thought it would be a fun way to go out. The fans of New York remember me more as third baseman. … I can at least make routine plays. That would’ve been fun for me and our fans.”
