This is the moment a dog at the city’s pound was dragged to its death.
A viral video taken inside the Manhattan Animal Care Center on May 9 shows workers using two leashes to drag a whimpering dog to the euthanasia room — offering a rare glimpse inside the scandal-scarred organization.
The video, posted to Facebook on Monday by animal activist Andrew Weprin, quickly racked up nearly 100,000 views and more than 4,000 shares.
“Disgraceful what these poor animals are put through during the last moments of life!” a woman named Tina Marie commented on the post.
The video shows the sedated pit bull pup being dragged on the floor before getting up and stumbling into the shelter’s kill room, while other dogs in the background loudly howl and bark.
The center defended euthanizing the dog — who it said was named Maverick — telling The Post he was brought to the shelter by the NYPD on April 25 at the behest of his Bronx family after allegedly biting his owner, sending the owner to the hospital.
Once at the shelter, workers said Maverick showed “serious aggression,” the center said — leading to its decision to euthanize him.
“In the case of Maverick was a serious risk to the public and there would be no way to anticipate the next target of this type of aggression, and no way to reasonably manage it in a home or shelter environment,” the center said.
“While his euthanasia remains sad for each of us, we are also tasked with ensuring public safety.”
But when Maverick was picked up by police at his former home, sources say the pooch was friendly, wagged his tail and hopped right into the back of the police cruiser where he remained calm and friendly the whole ride to the shelter.
The family member who brought Maverick out to the cop said his father was the only one who had an issue with the dog because he’d been bitten by him in the past and was the one who requested police pick it up, sources said.
Some enraged animal advocates shared the video of Maverick’s final moments in the hopes that it will spur legislation to make the city’s shelters “no kill” — ending the practice of euthanasia.
“The only remaining way to stop NYC ACC from abusing and killing innocent animals, like the poor dog in the video, is to pass the Companion Animal Protection Act,” wrote Weprin in a caption to the video.
“Now is the time to speak up for the defenseless victims of the kill pound who have no voice and no legal rights!”
The center has come under fire in the past over its animal kill list — which gives condemned pets just 18 hours to get adopted before they are put down — The Post previously reported.
The center is also being investigated by the New York State Attorney General, which is probing it for euthanizing dozens of dogs and cats mere days after having them undergo painful neutering, The Post reported in October.
